Every mistake has a reason

Most apps mark it wrong.
Alexandria tells you why.

A typical app

Ich gehe mit der Hund spazieren.

Incorrect. Correct answer: dem

…and you’re left guessing what went wrong.

Alexandria

Ich gehe mit dem Hund spazieren.

mit always takes the dative. In the dative, masculine der becomes dem.

Memory hook: aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu are always dative.

Then the card returns right before you’d forget it.

der, die, das.

German genders aren’t random. A noun’s ending often gives it away, and nobody tells you. Here’s how reliably each ending predicts the article:

Is Alexandria free?

Alexandria is free to download, and you can start studying right away with the premade decks, spaced-repetition reviews, and the built-in dictionary. Alexandria Premium unlocks the deeper tools: one-tap mistake explanations, Daily Stories, Ask Alexandria, audio, and all four cases in Case Practice.

Who is Alexandria for?

Learners from A1 to B2 who want to actually understand German grammar, not just collect streaks. It is especially useful if you live in a German-speaking country (or are about to) and need German for appointments, paperwork, work, and everyday life.

How is it different from other language apps?

You type the missing word in the exact form the sentence needs, so you practice articles, cases, and endings, not just recognition. When you miss, Alexandria explains the grammar behind your specific mistake and schedules the card to come back right before you would forget it.

Does it use spaced repetition?

Yes. Every card is scheduled with spaced repetition: easy cards come back less often, hard ones sooner, and the gaps grow from days to weeks to months. You can also tune the review intervals yourself.

Can I add my own words?

Yes. Tap any word in a sentence, story, or the dictionary and create a flashcard from it, or build your own decks alongside the premade A1–B2 and themed decks.

Is Alexandria available on Android?

Not yet. Alexandria is on iPhone today. The Alexandria German Dictionary on this site is free in any browser.

Where do the definitions and grammar tables come from?

Definitions and example sentences are written and curated by the Alexandria team. Pronunciation, conjugation, and declension tables are adapted from Wiktionary under the CC BY-SA license.

Can I learn Spanish too?

Spanish is available in the app as a beta. This site and most of the features above focus on German.

Make it the last time.

Free on iPhone. Your first session takes ten minutes.
